THE ' JOYFUL' SEASON OF LENT

Lent is a forty day period devoted to prayer, fasting and alms-giving, which helps us focus on the mystery of redemption. We are called to live joyfully because of the knowledge of God's love. Yes, we fast and do penance, but we do so in order to follow the path to joy.

Why should we think of it as the joyful season of Lent? The Lenten Liturgy has references to joy not only because it is a preparation for Easter, the feast of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ, but also because purification through prayer and fasting brings special delight to the soul. Pope Gregory the Great emphasized the theme during Lent,. He spoke of the two-fold path before us: the way of death that leads to misery, and the way of life that leads to joy. He used Psalm 1: 1-2 to make his point. "Happy are those who do not follow the advice of the wicked..but their delight is in the law of the Lord"
