Parish Youth Serve the Community at the Inaugural DeSales Youth Service Retreat

The retreat partnered with Urban Ministries of Durham and led participants through the spiritual guidance of St. Francis de Sales.

This past week, five youth from Holy Infant, ranging from 4th to 12th grade, took part in the first DeSales Service Youth Retreat.  Participants combined service with learning about Salesian Spirituality during the 3-day retreat. The theme, G.P.S (Gentleness, Patience and Simplicity), centered on how these virtues that St. Francis de Sales promoted can be used in our lives to direct us towards God.

The youth served the Durham community at Urban Ministries of Durham and Duke Hospital.  On Tuesday, they toured Urban Ministries of Durham and helped organize the donation closet and hygiene kits for the homeless. On Wednesday, they returned to prepare and serve a picnic dinner. The group served approximately 246 of our Durham neighbors thanks to the generous food donations from the Holy Infant parish community.

Thursday, the youth put their artistic talents to use and painted the windows on the Children’s wing of Duke Hospital, even helping a few patients to paint the windows as well!

"It was a very blessed retreat to learn more about Salesian spirituality and how we can apply it to our lives,” said Director of Formation for Children & Youth, Laura Anderson.
