At 2,300 pounds of food harvested so far this year, the Holy Infant Food Justice garden has already produced nearly as much as the total yield for all of 2019. And it’s all been donated to local food pantries.
As is typical for July, tomatoes top the list at 260 pounds along with melons at 206 pounds. Other top producers this month include squash (45 lbs), cucumbers (~40 lbs), peppers and spinach (~32 lbs), green beans (~22 lbs), and okra (~20 lbs).
The Lettuce Pray program got a boost in donations in July thanks to the gleaning of blueberries. In total, Lettuce Pray collected nearly 40 pounds of produce. Joanie Novak went to Honeysuckle Tea House and did gleaning with St. Andrews Society and brought back 13.5 lbs. The berries were joyfully received by Feed my Sheep Pantry.
The garden also got a helping hand this month from youth as part of the DeSales Service Works retreat. Eight of our youth spent an evening in the garden helping to harvest produce for local food banks.
Coordinator Bobi Gallagher reports that the bees are happy and that volunteers are always welcome. Workdays are Tuesday and Saturday mornings. Visit the
garden page for details and to learn how to get involved.
