We did it! Through your efforts, our Greener Lent community surpassed 500 participants for the first time ever! More than 500 people are gathered in Christ’s name to pray, fast, and give alms. Together, we are sacrificing in love and repentance for the harm done to God’s beautiful gift to us, His creation, and to the poor who are the most affected by the climate crisis that the "first world" created. Most of all, we are joining together as a community to emerge at Easter looking more like Christ! We are Anglicans, Baptists, Catholics, members of the Church of Christ, Episcopalians, Presbyterians, Unitarian Universalists, and people without a faith community. God is pleased that we are joined together this Lent.
Thank you for telling your neighbor or friend about Greener Lent, for promoting it, and for those who worked so hard in their faith communities to encourage others to fast, pray and give alms with us. It is not too late. Anyone can join!
For us, this Lent is a special time of year to focus on growing in virtue, conforming our lives to Christ, and really hearing His Gospel message. It is easy to hear the parts of the Gospel that are useful to us, but we seek to hear it in its entirety, even the parts where the message is difficult.
Although our sacrifice of reducing meat is an act of love for our earth and our poor, fasting finds its highest value when combined with prayer and almsgiving. This week, please commit to prayer, as you have committed to fasting. Commit to greater depth and time in prayer and an inward look at how you are using the gifts that God has provided. Also, please donate what you have saved so far (about $22.55 if you have replaced meat with plant-based foods) to CRS or another organization that will provide the poor with clean water and restores their land.
