Durham Artists' Work on Display at Immaculate Conception Church

Immaculate Conception Church will host Iridescent: An Exhibition of Artwork by Florence Alva from Oct. 22 - 24.

You are cordially invited to view paintings by noted artist Florence Alva, on display in the daily chapel of Immaculate Conception Church, 810 West Chapel Hill Street, Durham, from Sunday, October 22nd to Tuesday, October 24th from 9 am to 5 pm. Florence Alva lives and works in Durham, NC.  She has a BA in Art History from Marymount Manhattan College.

From the artist: “I have always been interested in architecture and geometry, and the magnificent lines of St Patrick's Cathedral inspired me to capture its beauty in art.  After graduating from Marymount, I created a series of large oil paintings using only blue, black, pearl, gold and silver.  I chose these colors to show the sharp contrast within the architecture's intricate design.  I did a series of 12 paintings with each depicting an alternating view from the outside and inside of the building.  I then did 2 large paintings; 'Alpha' and 'Omega'.  'Alpha' contains all the words from the scripture of 1 Corinthians 13, this being the Love verse.  The last and largest work in the series is 'Compass 1123' consisting of 9 panels measuring 21 by 21 feet.  My most recent work, "Stars" was selected for Artprize 9 in Grand Rapids, Michigan.” See more of Alva's work at
