Bishop & Director of Child & Youth Protection host listening session on Sex Abuse Scandal

On October 17th, the Diocese of Raleigh invited chair members of the Parish Pastoral Council and the Parish Finance Council from area parishes to participate in a listening session on the PA Sex Abuse Scandal.

This session, hosted by Bishop Luis Rafael Zarama & Dr. John Pendergrass (Director of Child & Youth Protection for the Diocese of Raleigh), drew in over 75 people from area parishes.  Dr. John Pendergrass opened the session by explaining the Safe Environment Training (SET) process that each individual working with children, youth or teens must go through.   Additionally, he explained the legal process when a call is made about abuse & what happens next (NC Catholics page 8-9).

The session's main focus was to allow the faithful gathered to express their concerns related to the PA Sex Abuse Scandal, what a safe environment looks like from the diocesan perspective, & how we can help shape the future of child & youth protection.  Many of the faithful gathered expressed interest in having a list of clergy with actionable allegation, which the diocese has created.

The Bishop reminded all gathered that we (as a Universal Church) are going through a Good Friday right now.  On Good Friday, Jesus was betrayed & left alone, but he did not give up.  We have hope in our Easter Sunday.  We are still a Church; it is through our tears & suffering that we are called to do our best & be our best.  It is a process to holiness & we must strive to be holier today than yesterday.

Are you interested in participating in a SET training session on how we as a parish & a diocese protect God's children?  Our next session, here at Holy Infant, will be held on Tuesday, January 29, 2019 starting at 6:30 PM.  Contact Leanne Woodward to register.

O God, our source of hope in time of affliction,
who teach us in moments of trial and pain
that you are the way, the truth, ad the life,
be for us now the one true light
that sines in any darkness.
By hope and memory, you lead all people
to trust in your ever-present care.
As we gather, grant us the surety of your presence.
May we confidently remember that you alone
can guide us towards newness of life.
Draw us all into your Life, Lord,
granting us the strength to be the disciples
you call us to be,
and enkindle in our hearts and minds,
wisdom and courage, compassion and kindness.
May our care and support for anyone in pain,
radiate brightly, your comfort and peace,
through which all people may be raised
to newness of life and hope.
For we ask this through Christ, our Lord.
Amen.
