"'In the beginning was the Word ... ' marks God's first encounter with us. God established a loving covenant with the people of God and through the Divine Word taught us to hope for salvation.
"The lector is the sacred storyteller of the community. Like the elders of tribal Israel and the early Christian evangelists, the lector solemnly proclaims the stories that give us our identity. In this, the lector is to be the leader, but before there can be a powerful telling of the story, the teller has to plunge into it, learn about it, know the characters, the times and the places. Like the presider, the lector must first be a part of the assembly."
