Holy Infant’s Food Justice Garden produced nearly 250 pounds of food in May. So far this year, the garden has donated 635 pounds of produce to local food pantries.
Berries were among the garden’s top producers this month. Holy Infant’s garden grows a variety of seasonal fruits that include strawberries, raspberries, blackberries and figs. Volunteers are currently harvesting raspberries, which will return in the fall, and the last of the strawberries. Blackberries and figs are summer crops.
Twice a week, produce harvested is sent to local food pantries. Garden ministry coordinator Bobi Gallagher encourages parishioners to come out and spend some time in the garden “to enjoy the green growing plants and to have some peaceful time.”
When you come, wear your mask and observe social distance. Currently, the ministry could use help to move wood chips if you're in need of aerobic exercise.
Here are the top crops for the month of May:
Sugar snap peas/soybeans – 79 pounds
Berries and figs – 74 pounds
Potatoes – 24.50 pounds
Kale – 14.5 pounds
Lettuce and chard – 14.25 pounds
Onions and garlic – 9.75 pounds
In addition, parishioners donated
13.25 pounds of produce from their home gardens for the Lettuce Pray program.
