It’s almost been a month of Sundays for live streaming Masses and connecting virtually. Though we’re physically apart, our community remains strong and engaged, proving once again that we are a people, not a place.
Parishioners have responded with immense gratitude for the comfort of connection during this extraordinary time. Up to 500 households each weekend have tuned in to celebrate Mass together, some from as far away as New Jersey and Texas. A former parishioner tuning in from New Jersey exclaimed: “I am so happy to be ‘back’ at Holy Infant – my favorite church in the world.”
We’re also hosting meetings and events via Zoom to keep our traditions alive while we’re apart.
A JYM member, who read during Shadow Stations of the Cross on Friday via Zoom, had this to say: “It was great to see familiar faces and not let this hard time stop us.”
And these hard times certainly have not stopped our parish.
You’ve shown in pictures and words how Mass is celebrated in your homes. You’ve participated in virtual faith formation and prayer groups. You’ve reached out for help, and to be a helper. You’ve shared words of encouragement and resources through our new private Facebook group, Holy Infant Connect & Share. You’ve called fellow parishioners just to check-in.
Our ministries are still going strong, finding ways to serve under these new restrictions.
Our Urban Ministries volunteers ordered dinner for delivery to the shelter on April 19.
Last Sunday, April 5, our CROP Walk team exceeded our parish goal with more than $1,700 in donations. Parishioners even got out and individually walked the miles they had intended to walk with others on Duke’s campus.
Our Food Justice Garden continues to make food deliveries to seniors at the Preiss-Steele housing complex and other areas of Durham.
Eucharistic Ministers to the Sick and Homebound continue to make phone calls and connect with our homebound parishioners.
Fireside Chats are also continuing via Zoom.
More opportunities to connect are coming next week. Look for resources and ways to help our greater community coming to our COVID-19 page. Also, two additional live stream broadcasts will start next week: Monday – Saturday daily Mass at 9 a.m. and Night Prayer at 8 p.m. on our website and our Facebook page.
