In the past week, Holy Infant gained four more participants and helped save more than 800 additional carbon equivalents.
As of Sunday, February 28, there are 378 total participants in the environment-based fasting program. The 38 participants from Holy Infant Catholic Church have so far helped save 1,378 carbon equivalents (a measure of all greenhouse gasses such as CO2, methane, etc.). That's 70 gallons of gasoline!
That number is a portion of the diocese's total of 15,349.5 CO2e, which is equal to 782 gallons of gasoline.
Greener Lent is a program that takes the Lenten traditions of fasting, abstinence and prayer and focuses them in order to positively impact those most vulnerable to climate change.
According to the program's website, 78 people participated in Greener Lent in 2020 and cumulatively saved an equivalent of over 660 gallons of gas. Program participants are asked to not only consider abstaining from meat on Fridays and Ash Wednesday but to be more mindful of their meat consumption throughout the season.
