In a year that has seen extraordinary need throughout the diocese, Holy Infant has stepped up to raise 96 percent of our Bishop’s Annual Appeal parish goal.
Holy Infant is just under $4,000 from meeting the parish goal of contributing $109,000 to support the work of the Catholic church in eastern North Carolina.
The BAA raises funds throughout the Diocese of Raleigh and provides services that reflect our Catholic belief in the sanctity of human life, the dignity of the individual and the central role of the family in life and society. Just over one-fifth of the BAA funds go to Catholic Charities, providing one-third of its budget.
This year, in particular, Catholic Charities has seen extraordinary need stemming from the pandemic. Food pantries, in particular, are seeing record numbers of families and individuals, some of whom have never reached out for help before.
Locally, the Catholic Charities-supported Durham Community Food Pantry reports that in the month of July, they served over 3,600 individuals, a more than 100 percent increase since February.
“We only see this number continuing to rise in the coming months and foreseeable future,” said David Juarez, program manager at the Durham food pantry.
In Greenville, as well, the food pantry is serving more families as the pandemic continues to affect communities in eastern North Carolina. In September, the pantry served a record-breaking 72 families in one day with their drive-thru weekly grocery distribution.
But food pantries aren’t the only group that BAA dollars support. Did you know that Catholic Charities also does comprehensive case management for families and individuals in need of mental and physical health care, immigration services and even housing assistance?
